  • Who Should Attend This Course: Asbestos awareness is legally covered in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 which requires persons whose work has the potential to expose them to asbestos. This is anyone who is likely to disturb the fabric of a building in any way such as drilling, chasing etc, or who may be working in environments where asbestos is an identified hazard and this course would also benefit managers and supervisors in order that they understand their duties and responsibilities.
  • Instructor Ratio: 12x trainees (maximum) per Instructor
  • Course Duration: 1/2 day Training Course (4 hours )
  • Location: Training can be delivered on-site and off-site depending on your requirements; training delivered on-site will be more advantageous to the trainees as the training can be specific to their workplace activities.

Aims of the course

The aim of the course is to provide adequate training for the purposes of Health and Safety for persons involved in general work environments where there is a potential for exposure to asbestos due to the nature of the workplace and the activities they undertake, the course includes lecture and worked participative examples and competency assessments.

  • Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992

Course Content

  • Have a clear understanding of their responsibilities under Health and Safety Law and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • What is asbestos, varying types and history of its uses
  • Where asbestos is found, emphasis will be given to the types of environment in which is and where discovered by the varying trades
  • Health effects (lung cancer, asbestosis, Mesothelioma)
  • Asbestos related ill health statistics/ ratios
  • Understand the principles for controlling asbestos risks and apply them within their workplace
  • Risk assessment, identify hazards and risk in the typical workplace where asbestos is likely to be found
  • Principles of control & understanding simple strategies for controlling hazards and reducing risks - Task Manual
  • What the Law says and the requirements of duty holders under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • How asbestos is removed
  • Assess their own work place activities and develop safer methods and tasks in co-operation with their supervisors / managers
  • Correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment)
  • Theory assessment

Prerequisites for this course

Operatives should be medically fit including good eyesight and hearing

Achievement Measurement for this course

The training is carried out in accordance with Accredited Standards includes a theory assessment leading to each trainee being issued a certificate of attendance.
